Frequently Asked Questions

Does my ISDN Line support Broadband?

ISDN is digital dial up technology. The standard format is ISDN2 which delivers two 64Kbps lines to a premise which can be amalgamated with special software to make a 128Kbps link or used as a data and separate phone line. It is dial-up so incurs a standard telephone call charge on each and every call made. (Using the amalgamated 128Kbps services is two calls.) ISDN is NOT compatible with Broadband. In order to install broadband on an ISDN line it must first be downgraded to a standard telephone line onto which broadband can be installed. This is either done by the broadband provider of choice or, in some cases must be done as a separate job before the broadband installation. Alternatively a separate phone line can be installed on which to support broadband. This might be advisable if a private telephone is attached to the ISDN service, as is common in small businesses and hotels, as the cost to upgrade or exchange the exchange will be a lot more than the cost of a separate line

Is my credit card reader compatible with broadband
Those funny gadgets that we put our credit cards into whilst we forget the pin number. Advice will be required from the source of the device as there are a wide range of different devices some compatible with broadband and some are not.

Can I use my alarm lines for broadband?
Alarm lines are usually connected back to the police and or fire brigade or third party services via a BT phone line. There is often no technical reason why these cannot be used for broadband and the alarm service at the same time. However, you must check with your alarm service supplier. If you do not know for sure the line should not be tampered with and must be left alone. We can confirm that Redcare users can use their alarm line for broadband. Redcare, supplied by BT, have confirmed full compatibility between their systems and broadband and given the ok for the dual use of the line.

What is Extended Reach?
Extended reach is a series of products aimed at getting higher speeds along longer cables.

Who are Commendium?

Are telephone calls over the internet really free?
If you are calling from an internet phone to another internet phone the call is free. You can with many systems break out of the internet and call a normal phone from an internet line. Effectively a conventional telephone call is made from the point of leaving the internet. Call charges will arrise for this in the normal way. In order to be able to break out you will have had to establish a payment mechanism with a provider.
